INTRODUCTION

This was really a family trip with our 17-month-old son rather than a birding trip. Having been to the extremes of Europe for the exciting species in the past, there was no pressure to see anything new. Just relaxed camping, sight-seeing with some birding and sound recording at dawn while the family slept on.

Literature, references & site guides used

•     Trip reports other than from commercial tour operators were few and far between - does anyone actually go birding        here?

•     Two very general guides give you a flavour but don't provide much detail:

Gorman, G. 2006. Birding in Eastern Europe. Wildsounds.

Gorman, G. 1994. Where to Watch Birds in Eastern Europe. Hamlyn.

The field guides of choice were:

Wood Warbler  Phylloscopus sibilatrix

 Sonogram of Wood Warbler song

Song composed of distinctive accelerating trill gradually decreasing in frequency to a rapid finish. Singing 2 metres from the ground in the lower branches of a spruce in mixed spruce/oaks forest.

 Common Chaffinch   Fringilla coelebs

Sonogram of Chaffinch song with terminal 'keek'

Mezni Louka, Hrensko, Czech Republic  18 June 2016

Territorial song from mixed spruce and oak. This song type contains a final keek element after the terminal flourish. Remarkably, following a stophe represented in the above sonogram, a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major) responds with its similar keek call (at 36 sec), slightly lower in frequency. This seem to be widespread in eastern Europe, and I've heard it in Estonia, Poland and Finland. I've never heard a terminal keek in the British Isles.
