Sonogram of Southern Oak Bush-cricket drumming (sonation)

Indoor recording in terrarium  17 August 2020  02:00h

Drumming (sonation) from a single captive male Southern Oak Bush-cricket (Meconema meridionale) in a terrarium at night.

A series of 3-8 abrupt (100ms), low frequency sounds (0.1-1.4 kHz) produced from the male tapping its hind leg on Ivy leaves in the presence of a female. At peak activity it produced 11 drumming bursts in one minute (at 25.1°C ambient room temp). Drumming bursts lasting between 0.8 and 3.6 secs.

Note: the volume here has been increased in the processed sound file, but the tapping was actually audible across the room under near-silent conditions.
