River Thames, Purfleet

Essex-Kent-London

23-Mar > 14-Jul 2020

Observers: F. Simpson

Introduction

During the 2020 SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus) pandemic, social distancing and self-isolation progressed to a more-or-less full lockdown of society to control the spread of the virus. Watching birds became restricted to our own homes. Many birders already kept a garden list but this form of birding became even more popular from necessity. In the Greater London area, over 40 locked-down birders on the local messaging group shared daily sightings, updating their current total each day from the start on March 23rd. Although I had an unfair advantage on the river, many birders logged good numbers from urban areas, documenting everything from migration of spring passerines and Red Kite/Common Buzzard passage to Common Scoter nocturnal migration calls.

From March 23rd I started a sub-list afresh of all birds scoped from my balcony. This overlooks the River Thames towards Dartford Marshes and the mouth of the River Darent (Dartford Creek) and since July 2015 I've recorded 165 species [Full List]. I normally did an early morning shift and a dusk watch. During sunny conditions the glare from the sun's southerly position restricts observation during the middle of the day but during dull/showery conditions I usually looked out several times per day to check on potential movements on the Thames Flyway. All sightings were logged on e-Bird.

In addition, I did some nocmig sound recording and scoped other wildlife such as Harbour Porpoise, Common and Grey Seals, Brimstone, Holly Blue and other insects.

A total of 120 species was recorded between 23-Mar and 14-Jul.
